2010

It’s hard to believe but this is the last week of school and this is the last NZPF Flyer for the 2010 year.  It’s a year that has been dominated by National Standards, so it is appropriate that we should finish the year by giving you the latest National Standards update.

In Flyer 28 we explained that Prof Gary Hawke, Chair of the Minister’s National Standards Sector Advisory Group (NSSAG), had invited us, through the Minister to present alternative wording to NAG 2A.

As we rapidly close in on the end of another academic year, let’s not lose focus on what has been and remains, a major campaign - developing momentum from early in 2009 and looking likely to continue into 2011 – that of voicing concerns about the flaws and inadequacies of what the government is calling ‘national standards’ but which we know to be neither national nor standards.

As our West Coast colleagues struggle to adjust after devastating news, messages and offers of support continue to stream in. This week we received a message from Gabrielle Leigh, President of the Victorian Principals’ Association in Melbourne saying:

‘Please pass on our condolences for the very sad unfolding of the mining tragedy. We had been hoping at this end that a miracle would occur.  Our thoughts are with you as a nation.’

This week our hearts and minds are focused on our colleagues and their school communities on the West Coast as families of the Pike River miners grieve the devastating loss of their loved ones.

In this community coal mining is not just for making a living, it is itself a way of life, deeply embedded in the culture and history of the district.

Still a few weeks to go before you hit those sunny beaches.

The Erma Bombeck quote above may give you some light relief but right now, I can empathise with the myriad jobs you have to complete before the end of the year, one of which of course is your end of year reporting.

I know you are constantly looking for ways to improve reporting to parents.

That has always been the case and to help that process, a group of colleagues has been formed called the ‘Practitioners’ Reporting Group.’

“It’s November the what?” I asked someone the other day.  What I really meant was, “What, it’s November?  How did that happen?”

As you count down the last six weeks of the school year, let’s take a deep breath, reflect on the past eleven months and make a list of all the great things that have happened this year, including the fantastic conversations you’ve had with your pupils, teachers, parents and colleagues.

Today is World Teachers’ Day!  It is the day to celebrate the magic you and your teachers do. Take a bow every one of you! I have just been to the ‘preview’ breakfast session of ‘World Teachers’ Day’ down at the Michael Fowler Centre here in Wellington.

There I met with a very young and high achieving Deputy Principal from Nawton School in Hamilton, Hurae White. Hurae won a ‘Linking Minds’ scholarship and travelled to the UK to study. He spoke of the key ingredient to his teaching success and, in his view, the key to any teacher’s success.

What an action packed first week of term it has been! It feels like we’ve covered seven weeks’ work in seven days! There are a number of issues to raise with you. These include the launch of our National Standards campaign, snippets from our recent NZPF executive meeting in Hamilton, the planning of our next NZPF conference in Wellington and the release of the Special Education Review.

The daffodils are fading; the lambs are fattening!  That means Spring is over and ...SUMMER is here - well almost!

After a great deal of deliberation, NZPF has yesterday declined the Minister's invitation to join her newly-formed National Standards Sector Advisory Group (NSSAG).
